A woman in a nurse’s smock pushes her cart into the mouth of the aisle. She blows air, billowing straggles of hair off her cheek, and looks the aisle up one side and down the other before backing her cart out.

“Twenty-five bucks,” I say.

He whistles through his teeth.

“They have shorter ones. Twenty-five feet.” I shift toward the bins of rope.

“Let me think.” He kneads the bag. His lips twitch as he works something out.

The floor’s hard under my knees.

The store’s lights flash across the plastic.

“If we cut it into ten-foot lengths, that’s five ropes,” he says. “Twenty-five feet would only give us two and a half ropes. I don’t know if ten feet is enough or too much or—”

“In the video it looked about ten feet. Maybe twelve. Definitely not less than ten.”

“Yeah, so, fifty feet it is.”

“Anything else?” I ask.

“Bandanas. Carry this,” he says, thrusting the pack of rope toward me.

Heat spills through my legs as I get up. I follow him out of hardware, down the wide aisles, past the movies and music and electronics, past the shoes. He hooks a right, into socks and underwear, his fingers touching the packages as we walk by, looking for bandanas.

“Hey,” I say, “you said you were busy when I texted.”

“Yeah, scrambling to get people to cover some shifts for me. Jared got us set up for three dates in the southeast. You know, so we’d stop bugging him about playing the show at The Lot.” He lifts a pack of briefs for me to see—boxer briefs; I’m not sure if he’s showing me the style or the guy’s package. His eyebrow quirks up. He puts the pack back. “Anyway, if we’re not in town, we can’t play The Lot, right? I mean, he hasn’t said that was his plan, but, you know Jared.”

“Wow, so next month? That’s short fucking notice.”

“Tell me about it. We’ll be gone a week, and I’m going to spend the rest of my life paying people back for taking my shifts. But there are some cool bands on the bill. So there’s that.”

I can’t wait for the day Lies Your Mother Told gets to tour outside of New England. I’m really hoping we get to do a gig in Kentucky when we do.

“I hope you’re getting paid well. Shit, to take a week off work and keep gas in the van, and eat.”

“Eating will probably be the first budget item to get cut.”

We find the bandanas with the belts and wallets. Matt grabs a three-pack: red, blue, black, and holds it up for me to nod at before he foists it on me.

“Checkout?” I ask.

“Clothespins,” he says.

My nipples pull tight. Taking long strides to keep up with him, I say, “You really want to do the clothespins?” It comes out leaning more toward incredulous than curious.

He turns, walking backward through women’s casual wear. “You don’t?”

“It just sounds painful is all.”

His steps slow until he stops altogether. “We don’t have to.” His brow creases, concern more than disappointment.
